A lot of people have heard of the term dagger but there is sometimes confusion on what it actually is. A dagger is basically just a knife with a short blade that is usually anywhere from six inches to twenty inches in length. In the past, it was usually used in combat and even sometimes used for preparing food, cleaning animals for eating and other common cutting tasks. These little knives usually come with a sheath or case to hold and protect the knife’s blade.

One of the best reasons that the dagger was used a lot in combat was because it was easier to carry and its smaller size made it easier to use in combat situations. These reasons made it a little more popular than a sword especially for smaller people who did not have the strength or stamina to carry and swing a heavy sword. Daggers were used a lot during ancient times but are now mainly just used more for collection or decorative purposes.

Daggers can come in all different sizes, styles and shapes and these include many types of blades. Blades are usually found to be straight or curved and many times this can depend on the origin of the dagger. There are also daggers made for decoration only which are not meant to be used in the traditional way as you would think - no cutting or killing for these daggers. These decorative type daggers feature fancy handles with engravings as well as engraved blades. A lot of dagger collectors flock to these decorative daggers to add to their collections.

The styles of daggers can usually also depend on the region that the dagger was made or the design originated from. There are many places in the world that, in a matter of speaking, have their own dagger design. Places like China, Scotland, Japan and many more have specific designs of daggers and a lot of collectors who are knowledgeable in each region know a dagger’s design origin just by looking at it.

Collecting daggers is great hobby and also an excellent way to learn some history of various locations that you may be interested in. There are many places both online and offline that different collectible daggers can be found at reasonable prices. Of course, like all other things, there are rare ones that might cost more but for the most part they are very reasonable priced. It will not take long before you have your own collection of daggers and history.
